Corps of Engineers opening Spillways sometime tonight

September 4th, 2008 by lamar

Well… we handled what was left of Gustav we thought quite well. The Corps of Engineers issued a release today that they were going to up the flow through Table Rock Dam into Lake Taneycomo to 20,000 CFS, once Table Rock hit the 920 mark. Needless to say with a Sunday crest expected at 923, we were a little shocked.

What this means is increased current flow, and some rising water. Since the Corps is not waiting until the creeks have run out from the rain, I expect the water will be higher Friday morning and then settle back down Saturday and Sunday. This flow will be maintained until Table Rock reaches 920 again and then it will be cut back.

Let me take this opportunity to say I think the fact that we have run no water most of the week, with a tropical storm approaching and then to react in this way is irresponsible. As the son of a Corp. retiree, I have never taken issue with their handling of things, UNTILL NOW. I think that it is high time we get involved with how all this is managed, and see if we’re making sense.

How does this effect fishing, we are back to where we were in March and early April. Small boats will not be rented with 20,000 cfs. We will allow 40hp motors and higher out for the few days this flow is occuring. Fish will be holding anywhere they can get out of this current, and lures and jigs will be tough to use.

Check back and we’ll update as soon as we have more information to give.

Very informative and appreciated comments on your web site. I have passed your website and it`s links onto many individuals that frequent Branson and Tanneycomo. Past March flooding when one would look at the moving water, you would have thought that every trout would have been swept downstream. Not true, fishing turned out to be better than expected with larger fish being taken. Like you had mentioned, the fish will hold where ever they can escape the current. Though trout are color blind, I found that the flourescent yellow power bait eggs, worked very well in the muddied water. Keep us informed with your web site. Hope the water levels get back to normal. Autumn is right around the corner and that means good fishin with milder temperatures. Keep a tight line and personally, we are looking forward to our time in Branson and all that Tanneycomo has to offer. > Sincerely, Larry B.
